I begin with a poem by the Nicene Church Father Clement of Alexandria, from the third century:

Sunset to sunrise changes now,

For God creates the world anew;

On the redeemer’s thorn-crowned brow,

The Wonders of that dawn we view.

Yet a more heav’nly lamp shines here;

And from the cross on Calv’ry’s height

Gleams of eternity appear.

Christmas Sermon
Gospel of Luke 2:1-20
December 24, 2009 At Christ Church Cathedral, Houston, Texas

Scripture from Luke 2:1-20:  In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered.
